Biography: Bruno Sammartino was an Italian-born American wrestler, regarded as one of the all-time greatest professional wrestlers. He worked with the World Wide Wrestling Federation, now known as the WWE, during which time he held the World Heavyweight Championship for a total of more than 11 years.
Sammartino began his career as a strongman, performing stunts in the Pittsburgh area. He was then put on television by Bob Prince, which led to his being spotted and recruited for the local professional wrestling scene.
He eventually debuted as a professional wrestler in 1959, then in 1960 fought his first match at Madison Square Garden. Sammartino would ultimately take the WWWF World Championship title in 1963 after defeating Nature Boy Buddy Rogers.
